SEO, AEO and GEO get used as if they were rival disciplines. They are not. They are three layers of one job: making sure people find your business, whether they search Google, ask ChatGPT, or read an AI Overview.

This guide compares them side by side, shows where they overlap, and helps you decide where to spend first.

What is the difference between AEO, SEO and GEO?

SEO (search engine optimization) earns rankings and clicks in search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) makes your content the direct answer in AI answers, snippets and voice. GEO (generative engine optimization) gets your brand cited and named inside generative AI responses. All three share the same foundations: indexable pages, useful content and trust.

Think of them as a funnel rather than three separate projects:

  • SEO gets your pages into the indexes that AI systems search.
  • AEO makes each passage clear enough to be lifted out as an answer.
  • GEO makes a generative model choose and name you when it writes its response.

The terms are young and people define them loosely. Many practitioners treat AEO and GEO as one practice. The distinctions below are useful for planning, not strict boundaries.

For the full definitions, read What is answer engine optimization? and our GEO guide. This page focuses on how they compare.

How do SEO, AEO and GEO compare side by side?

The main differences are the goal, the unit being optimized, and how success is measured. The foundations are shared, so the table below shows where the emphasis shifts.

SEOAEOGEO
Main goalRank and win clicksBe the direct answerBe cited or named in AI responses
Where it showsGoogle and Bing resultsSnippets, AI Overviews, voice, chatChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Mode, Copilot
Unit optimizedPagePassage or factBrand and entity
Key signalsRelevance, links, page experienceQuestion match, clarity, structureEvidence, third-party mentions, consistency
Core metricRankings, organic trafficAnswer inclusionCitations, mentions, share of voice

Two things stand out. First, every column depends on being crawlable and indexed. Second, the further right you go, the more signals sit off your website: reviews, press, forums and video.

When does SEO matter most?

SEO matters most whenever buyers still click through to compare, buy or book, and it underpins AEO and GEO everywhere. Transactional searches, local searches and product category pages still send meaningful traffic.

SEO is also the entry ticket for AI features. Google states that to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. OpenAI's help centre notes ChatGPT search may send disassociated queries to Bing to find web results. If search engines cannot index you, answer engines are unlikely to find you.

Prioritize SEO first if any of these apply:

  • Key pages are not indexed, slow, or rendered only by JavaScript.
  • You compete for high-intent commercial or local keywords.
  • Your site has thin or duplicate content.

Our SEO services cover this foundation, and AI SEO: what actually changes explains how the craft is evolving.

When does AEO matter most?

AEO matters most for question-led topics where the search result itself now answers the user. Definitions, how-tos, comparisons and "what is the best way to" queries are prime territory.

These are the searches where clicks shrink. Pew Research Center found Google users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when none did. In that study, 18% of searches produced an AI summary.

When the answer is shown on the results page, the win is being the source of it. AEO work here includes:

  1. Question-shaped headings that match real queries.
  2. A direct 40–60 word answer at the top of each section.
  3. Tables, numbered steps and definitions that are easy to lift.
  4. Facts backed by linked primary sources.

AEO suits publishers, SaaS companies, professional services and any business that educates buyers before they buy. See our AEO service for how we approach it.

When does GEO matter most?

GEO matters most for recommendation queries, where a buyer asks an AI assistant which product, provider or brand to choose. "Best CRM for a small agency" or "top dentists near me" are typical examples.

In these answers the brand name is the prize, whether or not a link appears. Engines form that recommendation from the wider web. An Ahrefs analysis of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions correlated with ChatGPT brand visibility at about 0.66, and YouTube mentions at about 0.74. Backlink metrics correlated much more weakly.

GEO work therefore leans on:

  • Reviews and ratings on the platforms your buyers trust.
  • Inclusion in credible comparison and "best of" articles.
  • Consistent brand facts across your site, profiles and listings.
  • Content with genuine data that others want to cite.

The Princeton research that coined the term found content with added citations and statistics could raise visibility in generative answers by up to 40% in its tests. We cover commercial prompts in depth in how ChatGPT chooses which brands to recommend.

Where do SEO, AEO and GEO overlap?

They overlap on almost every foundation: crawl access, indexation, helpful content, clear structure and brand trust. Most work you do for one pays off in the others.

Google says it directly. Its guidance for AI features states you "don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup" to appear in them. Its advice on AI search asks for unique, non-commodity content that people find helpful — the same principle behind classic SEO.

Shared work includes:

  • Technical access: robots.txt, sitemaps, fast server-rendered HTML.
  • Content quality: original information, expertise and clear sourcing.
  • Structure: logical headings, tables and concise answers.
  • Entity clarity: consistent name, address, description and profiles.
  • Reputation: reviews and mentions on trusted third-party sites.

The differences are in emphasis. SEO weighs rankings and links more. AEO weighs passage clarity. GEO weighs off-site consensus about your brand.

Which should you prioritize first?

Fix SEO foundations first, then add AEO structure to your key pages, then invest in GEO brand signals. That order follows the dependency chain: engines cannot cite what they cannot find or parse.

Use this sequence as a starting point:

  1. Access check. Confirm Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot can crawl you. OpenAI notes sites blocking OAI-SearchBot will not appear in ChatGPT search answers.
  2. Indexation. Submit sitemaps in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  3. Page structure. Rewrite your ten most important pages with question headings and answer-first sections.
  4. Evidence. Add sources, specifics and original data.
  5. Off-site signals. Build reviews, listings and third-party coverage.
  6. Measurement. Track rankings, AI citations and brand mentions together.

Your mix will shift with your market. A local plumber leans on SEO and reviews. A B2B software company leans harder on GEO. Run a quick baseline with our free GEO checker.

What mistakes do businesses make when splitting SEO, AEO and GEO?

The most common mistake is treating AEO or GEO as a replacement for SEO instead of a layer on top of it. Teams pause technical and content work to chase AI tricks, and then lose the index visibility those AI engines depend on.

Other frequent mistakes:

  • Buying "AI files" as a silver bullet. Google says no special AI text files or markup are needed for its AI features. An llms.txt file is optional housekeeping at best, as our llms.txt guide explains.
  • Mass-producing AI content. Google's spam policies define scaled content abuse as generating many pages primarily to manipulate rankings. That hurts all three layers.
  • Ignoring off-site reputation. A perfectly structured site still loses recommendations to brands with more reviews and mentions.
  • Measuring only rankings. You will miss wins and losses inside AI answers.
  • Keyword stuffing. The Princeton GEO study found it offered little to no improvement in generative answers.

How do you measure SEO, AEO and GEO together?

Use one scorecard with three rows: rankings and traffic for SEO, answer inclusion for AEO, and citations and mentions for GEO. Reviewing them together stops teams chasing one metric at the others' expense.

For SEO, keep using Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Google reports AI feature traffic inside Search Console's Performance report, under the "Web" search type, so it is blended with classic results.

For AEO and GEO, add:

  • Bing's AI Performance report, which shows citations across Copilot, Bing AI summaries and select partners, including grounding queries and cited pages.
  • A fixed prompt set run regularly across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, logging whether you are cited or named.
  • Referral segments in analytics for AI sources such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai.
  • Share of voice versus named competitors.

Expect noise. AI answers vary between runs, so look at trends over weeks rather than single checks.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Generative engines mostly retrieve from search indexes, so SEO remains the foundation. Google requires pages to be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear in AI Overviews. GEO adds work on top — evidence-rich content and third-party brand signals — but a site that neglects SEO will struggle to be cited anywhere.

Are AEO and GEO the same thing?

Mostly. Both aim to get your content used in AI-generated answers, and many agencies use the terms interchangeably. AEO has older roots in featured snippets and voice search and focuses on answer passages. GEO focuses on generative chat engines and on whether your brand gets named. The tactics overlap heavily.

Do I need separate teams for SEO, AEO and GEO?

Usually not. The same people can handle all three because the foundations are shared. What changes is the checklist: add answer-first writing, prompt tracking and brand-mention building to your SEO process. Larger brands may add digital PR support for the off-site side of GEO.

Which is most important for a local business?

SEO and local signals come first: an accurate Google Business Profile, consistent listings and genuine reviews. Google's own AI search guidance tells businesses to keep Business Profile information up to date. Those same signals feed local answers in AI engines, so good local SEO also covers most local GEO.

Links still matter for SEO, which feeds the candidate pool. But for brand visibility in AI answers, research such as Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study found branded mentions correlate more strongly than backlink metrics. Unlinked mentions in reviews, forums and articles can therefore help GEO even when they pass no link value.

How quickly can I see GEO results compared with SEO?

Technical fixes such as unblocking AI crawlers can take effect within days to weeks after recrawling. Content changes follow re-indexing. Brand-signal work such as reviews and press builds over months, similar to link building in SEO. Track trends over several weeks, because individual AI answers fluctuate.
